Marine Weather — Privacy Policy

Marine Weather is a marine planning app (maps, weather comparison, optional route planning). This policy describes what the app does on your device and what is sent over the network.

Who we are

The app is published under the package name fi.veneappi.app. For privacy or support questions, contact support@safelight.fi.

No account on our servers

Marine Weather does not require you to create an account with us. We do not operate a login server or store your identity on our own backend.

Location

• On your device: If you grant permission, the app uses GPS to centre the map on your position and to plan routes. Map centre coordinates are also used to request public weather summaries.
• Not uploaded to us: Your precise location is not sent to a developer-operated server. Coordinates are included only in requests your device makes directly to third-party weather and map services (see below), as required to fetch forecasts for that area.

Data stored on your device

• Preferences: Wind unit choice and local route-trial timing (stored with Android DataStore).
• Cache: Downloaded forecast data may be cached locally (Room database) to improve performance and reduce repeat downloads.
• Premium status: Google Play purchase state is handled by Google Play Billing; the app remembers entitlement locally after purchase or restore.
• Exports: If you export a route as GPX or PDF, files are written where you choose (e.g. Downloads).

Network and third-party services

The app needs internet access to load maps and weather. Your device contacts public APIs and tile servers, for example:

• Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) open data
• MET Norway (api.met.no)
• SMHI open data
• OpenStreetMap-related services (e.g. OpenFreeMap tiles, Overpass for harbour search)
• Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency open raster charts (when enabled)
• Google Play (in-app purchases and subscriptions for route planning premium)

Each provider has its own terms and privacy practices. Requests typically include approximate coordinates, app version, and a technical User-Agent string (MarineWeather/…) so services can apply fair-use rules.

Payments

Paid features (one-time purchase or subscription) are processed by Google Play Billing. We do not receive your payment card details. Google’s privacy policy applies to payment data.

Analytics and advertising

The app does not include third-party analytics SDKs or advertising networks.

Children

The app is not directed at children under 13 and is intended for marine planning by adults.

Changes

We may update this policy. The effective date at the top will change when we do. Continued use of the app after changes means you accept the updated policy.

Your rights

You can revoke location permission in Android settings, clear app storage, or uninstall the app to remove local data. For Google Play purchase issues, use Play Store subscription and order management.
